T-Shirt History Reveals The Number One Reason You
Wear A Tee - Shirt Is Simply For Comfort..

With the t-shirt growing in popularity every year among both young and old alike...
Art and Design truly of the people on the "blank canvass" of the
historical t-shirt..
has exploded into an essential modern expression domain of it's own.
So what exactly is the true meaning of T in T-Shirt? And by the way.. is the t-shirt of today a descendent of the Egyptian Tunic?
Our research department had a field
day with questions involving the history of T-shirts.
Myth or magic.. here is what they discovered:
* What's does the "T" refer to in "T-shirt?"
This reference is made only to
that of the shape of a t-shirt. When the t-shirt is stretched out.. or rather laid
flat.. it's form has a natural "T" shape.
Much of the information on the history of
t-shirts appears to be regurgitations from the same sources. But don't
worry. There is enough good information on the history of t-shirts to at
least give you a basic start in understanding the roots of this "T-shaped" garment.
* Is the t-shirt
of today a descendent of the Egyptian Tunic?
It appears that
the Egyptian Tunic had characteristics akin to our modern day t-shirt
and that it may have been used by Egyptian farmers, or fellaheen, hundreds
of years before the First Dynasty.
With over 2000 tombs Tarkhan is one of the most important cemeteries
from the time of state formation (about 3000 BC) in Egypt. It was from this site
that one of the first Egyptian Tunics was discovered.
Due to the heat.. many ancient Egyptians wore clothes that were very thin and light. The
Egyptian people made
most of their clothes out of flax which they could turn into linen.
The design
and use of the Egyptian Tunic like the cotton t-shirt of today, was a simple constructed
"T-shape slip-on" garment
piece.
T-Shirt History: From Outerwear
To Underwear
Weather the history of t-shirts can truly show that the t-shirt is a true descendant of the tunic or not.. one thing is certain..
and that is.. that both the tunic and modern day t-shirt have served
mankind quite well as both
outerwear and underwear.
Men and women have worn underwear of one type or
another.. for thousands of years.
Unlike the Egyptian tunic that was purposely used only as outerwear. The
Tunic design was the common undergarment of citizens and non-citizens alike
during the Roman civilization..
The Tunic was worn under the toga.
The presence or lack of stripes on the Tunic, as well as the width and
ornamentation, would indicate the wearer's status in Roman society.
It's also alleged that during the " Twelfth Century Mongol Invasion Of Europe.. "
Mongol Warriors wore silk tunic designed undershirts that helped to prevent enemy arrows
from penetrating their bodies.
Every warrior was required to wear a long, loose tunic undershirt next to his
skin that had been made from raw silk.. an enemy arrow might pierce a warriors
armor and penetrate his body,
but it would usually fail to cut completely through the silk and would instead
carry the silk with it into the wound.
By carefully lifting the twisted silk around the wound, the Mongols could
draw the arrow out, turning its head along the same route as the one by which it
had entered, and thus leave the wound neat and small as possible.
T-Shirt History: The T-Shirt From Underwear
Back To Outerwear.. Again!
The T-shirt first came to the USA during the WWI period after the US Military
noticed how the light cotton undershirts worn by European soldiers were
so effective.
During WWII the fast becoming world popular T-shirt had become standard issue underwear in
both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.
Back to outerwear again
No one really knows when the first blank T-shirt was scribbled upon or artistically
produced in one or more quantities but t-shirt popularity as outerwear
was on the move long before professional athletic teams, corporations, and rock bands saw
them as billboard advertisement vehicles.
Marlon Brando, James Dean, John Wayne, and Elvis
Presley may have helped to make the T-shirt-as-outerwear manly and sexy
by wearing their “T-shirts” on stage.. however..
more credit is given that.. the true popularity surge of the t-shirt can be
gifted
to the pop art created by the baby boomers and famously labeled hippies of the 60's
In the 1960's
hippies abandoned American traditional dress styles for tye dye t-shirts.
(how to tie dye t-shirts may be a craft you'll enjoy).
White "blank" T-shirts to help one express love and flower power..
became one of the best, and cheapest, forms of comfort clothing to buy, dye, and wear.
The History Of T-Shirts..
is being made daily by thousands of individuals using the blank canvass T-shaped
shirt.. outerwear medium.. to express
their ideas.
The only question that may remain about the history of t-shirts..
is when will you make use of it? :)
